Did you know that you need a permit to drive a boat in Everglades National Park?

This affects upper Florida Keys residents that boat on the bay side. Areas west of the channel markers are considered part of the Park. If you are boating in this area and get pulled over, they will ask you for your Everglades National Park Boater Permit. If you don’t have one, you will be fined. This just became effective this month. The license is free this year and will be @ $50.00 next year.

To get your permit, you can go to Enter course name Everglades National Park Online Boater Education Course. Once you take the course, you must pass the assessment with 80% (minimum 12 out of 15 questions). Print out or scan a copy of your certificate to your phone.

Conveniently located bayside in Tavernier (mile marker 93), Sunset Acres has quick access to the ocean via Tavernier Creek. It is an hour drive from Miami and close to shopping, movie theaters and restaurants. This is a small friendly community with concrete homes, modular homes and manufactured homes. Some misconceptions of manufactured homes are that they can not be financed. This is not true. If the home is built after 1976, they are financeable via conventional loans with as low as 10% down payment. Also, the new homes are being built to withstand 180 mile an hour winds.  Many come equipped with impact windows and metal roofs.

I am optimistic about our wonderful Florida Keys. I believe we will be stronger and better than before Hurricane Irma. The recovery is still a work in progress, but changes can be seen daily. One of my favorite sayings is “You can’t drown a conch”.

The Upper Keys (Key Largo, Tavernier and Islamorada) were not affected as bad as the Lower Keys (Big Pine Key and surrounding area). Also, properties on the bayside fared better than properties on the oceanside.

In the Upper Keys, many neighborhoods had power within a few days. Some never lost power. In many cases, electricity in the Keys was restored quicker than in Miami.

In the real estate market, there are fewer homes available for sale today than before the storm. Currently, there are 6-9 months of inventory. Sellers have not flooded the market with new listings. Interest rates remain low. The average sales price is between $500k and $600k. These are great signs of a stable market.

Winter Season

Another winter season has come and gone in the Florida Keys. Year after year, the same people come to our community and spend 4 to 5 months with us. Some have been renting the same place for 15 years. We have made lifelong friends with some of them. The good news is that we will see them again in 6 or so months. Now comes the summer, when the locals from Miami come more often. We will swim in the canal and have good times with them.

It is located on the bayside just south of Tavernier Creek. There are over 200 decorated toilet seats as you go through the channel. The themes of these seats range from announcing anniversaries and weddings to mentioning long weekends and local businesses.  I love showing friends and family this channel. It is a 10 minute ride from our home.

A few years back, we decorated a toilet seat and hung it on the west side of the channel. We would drive by and see it all the time. It disappeared after a good storm. We still get a good laugh thinking of that creative seat and have pictures of it at home.
