I love fall and winters in the Keys! It’s time for stone crabs and will soon be time for blue crabs!

Did you know that effective October 15, 2019, you need a stone crab trap registration in addition to your saltwater fishing license to catch stone crabs in a trap. Also, effective January 1, 2020, you will need a blue crab trap registration in addition to your saltwater fishing license to catch blue crabs in a trap. These registration numbers must be displayed on your trap.

To get these registration numbers, you can go to and add these to your license. They are free this year. You will be given 5 numbers for stone crabs and 5 numbers for blue crabs.

Available October 1st, 2019 through April 1st, 2020.

Did you know that you need a permit to drive a boat in Everglades National Park?

This affects upper Florida Keys residents that boat on the bay side. Areas west of the channel markers are considered part of the Park. If you are boating in this area and get pulled over, they will ask you for your Everglades National Park Boater Permit. If you don’t have one, you will be fined. This just became effective this month. The license is free this year and will be @ $50.00 next year.

To get your permit, you can go to Enter course name Everglades National Park Online Boater Education Course. Once you take the course, you must pass the assessment with 80% (minimum 12 out of 15 questions). Print out or scan a copy of your certificate to your phone.

  1. Buying a second home (keys retreat) ahead of time, can help you ease into retirement.
  2. Location, view and other amenities will determine if it is a wise investment or financial bust. Don’t rush your decision. I can help you with this.
  3. Your main motivating factor should be to relax. Renting your home can be profitable, but consider the constant cleaning and other factors. For top dollar, you would rent your home at a time you would most probably want to go.
  4. Rule of thumb – your keys retreat should be less than 2 hours from your primary residence. It will be frequented more often than something further away.
  5. Know the costs. Make sure you can afford the new place. Calculate mortgage payment, real estate taxes, property insurance, utility bills, maintenance and possible repairs.
  6. Find a lender who is familiar with the Florida Keys. I can help recommend several lenders.
  7. Your keys retreat can function as a weekly mini vacation from the hustle and bustle of your every-day lives. Enjoy it weekly until you retire. When the time is right, you can make it your primary home.
